(The real Columbus Day)
“In fourteen hundred ninety-two,
Columbus sailed the ocean blue”.
Where once we paused to celebrate,
it’s now an ordinary date.
His bold adventure sailing west
put navigation to the test.
And here we are. That brave, small band
has spread by millions cross the land.
So let us pause and think about
those hearty sailors who set out —
who left their homes with hope and fear —
to find this land we’ve settled here.
It is truly amazing that these early explorers were willing to venture out across the Atlantic Ocean without any idea what they would encounter. A replica of the Golden Hind was docked south of San Francisco. It was tiny!

it’s hard for me to imagine what the world was like those hundreds of years ago. But today I am thinking: most of us here come from immigrant ancestors!

I think unless you still live in the Olduvai Gorge in East Africa, everyone everywhere is an immigrant.
