Fresh faced kids head off to school,
ready to learn the Golden Rule.
Eager to grow and have some fun.
Somewhere, a shooter loads his gun.
Oh, well.

Dear Teacher, don’t you understand
that I’m afraid to die?
I can’t think about subjunctive tense
or how to multiply.
I can’t think about world history
or times that came before.
I’m simply terrified I’ll see
a gunman at the door.
Dear Teacher, please look at my hand.
Dear Teacher, notice me.
Dear Teacher, let me be the one.
Dear Teacher, please choose me.
Ev’ry day I go outside
to fill my yard waste bin.
Ev’ry week the truck comes by
and empties it again.
Ev’ry day I go back out
and load the waste within.
And ev’ry week the truck comes by
and starts it all again.
You’d think that Bend’s a quiet place
on a summer Sunday night.
You could run down to the Safeway store
and then pack up for the night.
You’d think it would be simple
just to choose a thing or two.
Then hustle through the check-out line,
and, Presto! You are through.
But, nothing’s simple any more.
No place is free from strife.
Your quick trip down to Safeway
is where the shooter ends your life.
Oh, well.
I’m in the race for President.
In the polls, I’m far ahead.
My platform is a simple one:
More! More! Zucchini Bread!
I make The Best zucchini bread.
When you taste it, you’ll agree.
I bake the Best Zucchini Bread
with my Schmitz Park recipe.
Spiders lurking in the bathtub…
Yup! This morning we had rain.
Just like that!…we’re back to normal.
Northwest gloom is here again.
There are spiders in the bathtub.
that’s a sure sign of the fall.
You can tell the summer’s over
when the spiders come to call.
The Puget Sound is baking in an
Unexpected Heat.
I know that many welcome it…
a most delicious treat!
I’m getting tired of heat and sun.
I don’t want to complain.
But, my eyes are getting ready
for a little Northwest rain.
I’m baking my zucchini bread.
It sort of makes me drool.
I use the special recipe
I got at Schmitz Park School.
