The Aardvark and the Zebra
make a most unlikely pair.
In fact, to think about it,
they’re a blt hard to compare.
The Aardvark is lethargic.
He’s an unattractive beast.
His anti-social habits
don’t endear him in the least.
The Zebra is a beauty,
fast and fluid on his feet,
drawing looks of admiration
from each one he gets to meet.
You’d think, among the animals,
the Zebra would be first,
and somewhere down the lineup
sluggish Aardvark would be worst.
But in the world of alphabets,
of letters and of books,
reality is diff’rent.
It is not the way it looks.
Aardvark is a creature
that the Zebra should have passed,
but alphabet makes Aardvark first.
The Zebra’s always last.
Zebra’s are beauties, it is true! But if you are looking for unique….well, the aardvark has it.

It’s true — among the animals, the aardvark is unique. Perhaps that’s why, ‘tween you and I, it doth our int’rest pique.

It is clever! It reminds me of Walt Kelly’s Songs of the Pogo. I shall shamelessly plagiarize from the inside cover of his book by that name:
This blog contains words suitable for any occasion–birthdays, clandestine trysts, medical checkups, elevator rides, evenings at the public library, police raids, paying last years bills…
