The earth is unfriendly.
It liketh us not.
The temperature varies.
Too cold. Then, too hot.
The oceans are rising,
the forests on fire.
The food chain is threatened.
The future seems dire.
The question’s before us:
Will we do what we can?
Or will we drift idly
to the Ending of Man?
A little pink primrose lifted its head
and reached for the sullen sky.
It’s promise on this wintry day:
Spring’ll be here by and by.
Fifteen hundred die each day.
We count them – one by one.
We hear the news – then turn away—
as the march of death goes on.
I need a quiet lullaby…
notes running through my head.
I need a quiet lullaby…
before I go to bed.
I need to hear a simple song…
before I close my eyes.
I need a lullaby to sleep…
before it’s time to rise.
Some cast their votes
with honor and duty.
Some just want their
share of the booty.
The ice and snow are melting fast.
I can get out to the street at last!
I’d stay inside till I feel a bit fitter…
but I’m ‘bout to run out of kitty litter.
Democracy faltered in ’21.
The country stumbled, but struggled on.
A rage of hate engulfed our nation.
COVID added its consternation.
The future’s murky.
It’s hard to see…
Will we still have freedom?
…and liberty?
An Elf danced by with Pepsi.
What a boost to lift my day!
‘Twas better than a Christmas gift
tossed out from Santa’s sleigh!
The world is looking up for me.
This ice is near the end.
And all is well inside my house
with Pepsi as my friend!

Before we had COVID,
there were people galore.
There were teachers in classrooms.
Clerks clerked in the store.
There used to be plumbers
to plug up the leaks,
and snappy Park Rangers
patrolling our peaks
There were folks who ran pawn shops
and cops on the beat.
There were men driving big trucks
to sweep up the street.
There were nurses and mailmen
and men who plowed snow.
There used to be People.
Where did they go?

It’s eleven days that I’ve been inside.
It’s a world of ice and snow.
A St. Bernard with a Pepsi
would relieve the Status Quo…
