Old women like me get a dowager’s hump…
makes us look all out of whack.
We need to be like the infantry:
Straighten Up Your Back!

I had myself a Chocolate Fix.
It was a sweet and nutty mix.
I savored it – slow and carefully.
And, Oh! It tasted Good to me!
I weep for our country.
I cannot see
how to scour this stain on
our history.
The desperate death toll rises.
Thousands die each day and night.
The vaccine rolls out slowly.
Thousands more will die by night.
The Rubatino trucks are out.
They’re busy on the street…
with flashing lights and crashing gears…
their dominance complete.
I won’t go for my daily walk.
They like to bait and dare me.
They like to lurch their trucks around.
It’s fun for them to scare me.
We’ve had Bad Times before and
we will have Bad Times again.
We’re not immune from trouble
from without or from within.
We’ll do what we have always done–
we’ll search our doubting heart.
We’ll choose the road we Value
and we’ll make another start.
Protesters stormed the Capitol.
The President cheered their way.
For the United States of America,
it was our Awful Day.
The Virus deaths keep climbing
at an escalating rate.
The vaccine holds out promise,
but that promise is too late.
I don’t know why the caged bird sings,
or why there’s sudden laughter.
I don’t know what the future holds
or if there’s life hereafter.
I don’t know why the virus came…
put mankind to the test.
I only know each day I rise
and try to do my best.
Our economy’s built on buying stuff
which means we never will get enough.
Bank statements show how much we’re owing.
Garbage dumps are overflowing
Robo Callers hunt and hound us.
Sleek advertising swirls around us.
They want us to buy the newest and latest
and toss the stuff they claim will date us.
We rent new units just for storing
extra junk that we’re ignoring.
Economists wring their hands with woe
when we don’t buy, don’t shell out dough.
Buying’s become the mark of success,
the measurement of our happiness.
But, there’s never a chance for a moment’s peace
when we’re straining to buy the latest release.
